Rory & the Devil

I'm very impressed with the skill of playwright and director David McElwee. His debut of Rory and the Devil revealed a gift for writing and command of language. To present the 1970s political turmoil of Northern Ireland in all its complexities within a compelling and personable story is not easy yet he succeeded beautifully.... full review

Fun characters in a simple story allows it to be about them and not the plot. Enough heart to make us care, but not so much that we lose the comedy. Some of the best fight choreography I've ever seen on stage. ... full review

I saw this production in February at LACC and was blown away. I had already seen a different production of Start Swimming which I thought was very good and the bar was set high. This production is out of this world. I can’t wait to see it again! If you only see one play at Fringe it must be Start Swimming. You won’t regret it!" sweet... full review

The 2nd Annual Trump Family Special

daniel faigin · June 09, 2019 certified reviewer
Over the years at Fringe, I’ve seen numerous shows dealing with Trump. These have ranged from the totally warped Zombie Clown Trump, the Star-Trek mashup Trump in Space, and the quite good The Dangerous Cures of Dr. B, which uses the demagogue John Brinkley as an analogue for the pedagogy of Donald Trump. The 2nd Annual Trump Family Special does a great job of skewering the first family, their foibles and personalities, and how Trump relates to them. But does it make a strong cases or have a deep... full review

She Kills Monsters

etting back to She Kills Monsters: We just loved the story of She Kills Monsters, and the message it sends on female empowerment and the positive aspects of role playing games. I never got into RPGs for the same reason that I’m a professional audience, and not either on stage or writing the stories: I can’t inhabit characters, or imagine their stories. But I know D&D players well; I knew folks who were deep in that community when I was in the UCLA Computer Club in the late 1970s. This captured th... full review

Come On Down

This little gem had me and the audience laughing out loud for much of the show and that is a tribute to the fine ensemble as well as to the writing. At times the ghost of Kurt Vonnegut came to my mind, he doesn't appear in the play, but his spirit speaks to the existential kind of amusing musings he did so well. I look forward to this rookie playwrights next venture. ... full review

Fantastic as always! There's so much to unpack that I might have to watch it a third time. It's a quest for a grail like none other, and it's just the kind of quest I'm looking for. I love how they convey so much information about desires, goals, relationships, politics etc.. and they do so by not only using language, but song, dance, gestures, rhythm and more. Never a dull moment, and packed with wonderful messages. This will probably be one of the best shows I'll see at Fringe. Lots of talent... full review

Hell's Finest

Hell’s Finest was all over the map, changing tone and content and even genre with hairpin turns. Sometimes genuinely funny, sometimes genuinely disturbing - and once genuinely terrifying. And I still don’t know what to make of it. In other words, it just might be the perfect Fringe show. Evil mastermind Ashlynn Judy has brought to The Complex a complex immersive experience where it’s hard to know when to laugh or when to be shocked - or when to try both. The audience can’t even catch their br... full review

Riveting, raw, real & a riot Crack Whore, Bulimic, Girl Next Door opts for an anesthetic of darkest humour drawing you into a complex and beautiful story of healing and self-love.
