A hilarious sendup of an all too common occurrence, the solo show as a showcase or validation. Matt Ritchey takes that and literally runs all over the theater with it, turning it into a silly, sweet existential cry for help. Lisa is absolutely perfect for this role. She’s clever, quick, and has this subtle cheekiness that fits right in to this piece. I loved the set design and how the bright reds contrasted with the black box. It was very modern-looking and not like it was put together in 15 minutes (the usual load-in time for fringe shows). My favorite ensemble shows are ones where the cast meshes easily and obviously gets along well with each other. Mayor’s Debate was exactly this. M.O.M.S. gives us a glimpse into the life of Moms Mabley through the eyes of a woman in the late 70s who has just been raped and is trying desperately to cope. The piece is a clever vehicle for this fascinating piece of history, but left me wanting to know much more about the comedian who paved the way for so many to follow. ... full review
