Public Domain: The Musical

What a GREAT concept: Zinging Disney Inc (not legally safe) by auditioning a half-dozen "royalty-free" fictional characters, presided over by two suspiciously familiar "Muppets"! Too bad the song score is so so-so and the scripted humor so banal. Since it IS "public domain" somebody more talented may just run with it to success. I was leery of going so very far afield from Fringe Central to see a 30-minute show (which IS 30 minutes long), but the concept drew me in. Some of the cast members e... full review

Gunfight at the Not-So-OK Saloon

Full writeup at https://cahighways.org/wordpress/?p=15387 It was a great Fringe show, and would have been a perfect headliner at the Tumbleweed Festival, a “wild-west” equivalent of the Renaissance Faire. However, the show was not ready for prime time — “prime time” being the traditional Opera or Operetta stage. For that, it needs some work and to decide what it wants to be when it grows up. But as a Fringe show, it was strong. this is Fringe. It is rare that a show is fully realized at Fring ... full review

An expansive, choose-your-own adventure style show with so many moving parts (for better or worse), it's an immersive joy for people of all ages. If you're a fan of improv combined with detailed story, and also enjoy ancient mythology from different societies, this show is for you.... full review

PRETTY, WITTY NELL

"British verse playwright" RYAN J-W SMITH applied his "quixotic quill" to LOVE LABOURS WON and MacDETH in Fringes past and won LA over---to iambic pentameter! This year his ode to Nell Gwyn arrived with lots of bells and whistles that were unnecessary (and an impediment to following the iambic text), so: back to the drawing board, jettison the kit (including his own co-starring role) and just tell the story as a solo show vehicle for Melanie Johnson. Now she's getting standing ovations, and the... full review

A Time Traveler's Guide to the Present

Doug is somehow able to perform time travel in real-time; I don't really know how to describe it other than to say that his performance is brilliant, that each character he portrays somehow occupies their own distinct time and space within the same body, and that Doug is a very sweet caveman that had the audience's sympathies throughout the entirety of his tumultuous courtship with Grogina.... full review

Loved it! This is one of the few shows at Fringe that can stand alone as a proper addition to and established theater's season. And hopefully it will have a life beyond Fringe as such. Tremendous effort from a debuting playwright and director. Go see it and enjoy the DRAMA!!!... full review

Ed Goodman's Ol' Timey Brainwash

After a thorough washing of my brain, I now have the psychological clarity to confirm: Ed Goodman is not only ol' timey, but good timey; Ed Goodman is, in fact, a good man. Also, this is the best solo play ever written because it allowed me to hold a fake gun to Ed's head for 5 minutes, after which the audience demanded I pull the trigger.... full review

An absolute MUST SEE at the Fringe! Mind-blowing performance by Conor Hanney in this one-man show! How any one person can so creatively come up with a storyline off the top of their head for an hour AND make-up and sing the lyrics on the spot is awe inspiring! This guy can act, sing, dance, rap, tap, and improvise with the best of them! He is one talented, smart dude! We never stopped laughing the whole show! Definitely my favorite show so far at the Fringe!... full review
