Pho Girl

Up front: Brigette was my Scholarship mentee for 2019. I had no creative connection to the show. Holy cow this show is great. Not only is the story of a girl discovering her heritage interesting, especially through the lens of cultural food dishes, but Brigette is a fantastic storyteller! She's honest, connected, and it's hard to believe that the show isn't a first-hand account with her simply walking us through the most important moment in her life. A tight script and fluid direction by Ch... full review

A truly beautiful staging of a great script. I have not read Little Women, but the script does a great job hitting both the beats of that series of books and Lousia May Alcott's life, so even an Alcott noob can appreciate. And there's a lot to appreciate. The design and choreography were so thoughtful and effective, proof that you don't need a humongous budget to create magical stage moments.... full review

Butcher Holler Here We Come!

What an absolute rush. Heightened poetry drawn from miner colloquialisms crash against the weaponization of classic country music in a deeply uncomfortable piece. At times, I forgave myself for following the eyeline of the actors in seeing the barely-resolved dangers of the caved-in coal mine, staged in an otherwise unassuming dance studio at Thymele Arts. One wouldn't think the comfort of fluorescent lights and the promise of safety in relatively familiar circumstances would be so sorely missed,... full review

In this piece, the miraculous man on the stage does the unthinkable to some, and perhaps even the explicitly forbidden to others— he calmly and carefully walks a room full of people through the inner-workings of his psyche; his most cherished secrets and beliefs. “Naked Onstage” is a feat of the human condition, and I urge you and yours to see it, not only for the hilarious exploits it entails, but for the unique and exquisite thrill of seeing the world through someone else’s eyes. ... full review

What a fun show! The word that keeps coming to mind is 'pleasant.' I think it was such a clever idea to, not only flip the stage, but have the acts mirrored, which at first I found confusing but when it was revealed in the second act I was in love! Probably my favorite thing in the show was the dialogue from the rocket scientist character Murphy. I love when a show, especially a comedy, can find space to insert pockets of really intellectual and sometimes even profound dialogue. That character wa... full review

This show delivers in what is advertises: two completely different performances, for the price of one, by two very talented women. The first show is experimental using interpretive dance to underscore a character's emerging feminism, and the second is a LOL comedy about death. I mean, come on, you need to see this.... full review

What a tight pieces of unique storytelling. These actors such a strong and enveloping tale. At times I felt we were all there in the mine with them, with the weight of the earth pushing us all down. The script was written with a real sense of naturalism that lends itself well to the emotional availability of which each of the actors approached their role. This team produced a piece which felt like a slice of life, grounded in a beautifully vulnerable tale of love. This show was solid and commendable, and I recommend giving it a view. ... full review

When you are asked by a friend to see a one person show - you do everything you can to see it - that person has condensed their life for you and its a time to have a pure - bare bones experience with them in a structured level thats entirely on their own terms. A Year In Dragonfly is an elevated experience that descends from a staircase with a bang and rises to heal with hope and with bold clarity. It is rough only when it needs to be and thus stronger this way in its impact. I appreciate the ha... full review

This show is an exploration down a strange and unique rabbit hole. It not only imagines aspects of the early childhood of Donald Trump, but adds a dark premonition and partial theory of how and why we ended up with him as our president. And it’s all brought to us through the complex psyche of his mother. It sent me on a thoughtful and emotional journey that I’m still thinking about, and will continue thinking about for the foreseeable future.... full review

Not at all what I was expecting, and completely blew me away!!! One of the highest energy shows I've ever seen, I was almost out of breath keeping up with it all! What an incredible ensemble; they play off each other so well, overlapping dialogue and coming together at the end seamlessly. Every single character is so memorable and so dear to my heart.
