Orangutan

ben moroski · June 09, 2019 certified reviewer
A primally urgent and wildly intelligent play for our moment. Troy Deutsch's "Orangutan" could have easily found itself trapped in the echo chamber of a one-joke premise. Instead, it resounds with the poisonously barbed comedy of Edward St. Aubyn's Patrick Melrose novels and the savage, philosophical gymnastics of Edward Albee. Horror, humor and rage -- a wild ride reminiscent of Ellen Burstyn's Sara Goldfarb in "Requiem for a Dream" -- brought to vivid life by Kristina Mueller's electric perform... full review

Las Garcia - BEYOND ENCORE

A must-see at the 2016 Hollywood Fringe - even if solo theatre is not your thing. Ortega is a luminous talent and, under Alex Alpharaoh's skilled, muscular direction, "Las Garcia" burns brightly. Do not miss this play. A richly rewarding experience.... full review

Murder Blood Bear Story

Luminous. A delight. An experience. I had no idea what to expect walking into a play about searching for happiness. What I found was lightning in a bottle. The writing here is razor sharp, the performance is daring and specific and unabashedly alive, the direction is rigorous and daring. A wonderfully quirky and experimental mix of story, song, dance and character that meld into something quite beautiful and truly moving. For anyone looking for a grounded comparison for a show that defies definit... full review

The Oy of Sex

I just loved this show. Alicia is an incredibly generous and thoughtful performer - not just about her demanding and personal subject matter, but generous with and thoughtful of her live audience. Those essential elements of solo performance that often goes missing are present in Alicia's performance and the whole of "The Oy of Sex" in abundance and make the entire hour a joy. I laughed my ass off nearly the entire time and at the same time, I empathized and I thought and I considered and I learn... full review

MAX & ELSA: NO MUSIC. NO CHILDREN.

Yes yes yes yes yes. "Max and Elsa" is sold out for a reason -- many reasons. Chief of which is that it just simply rocks. Four actors operating at the top of their comedy game. A polished and breathless piece of theatre. This is the kind of show that makes Fringe great. Of the same stylistic ilk as last year's "Women" (but with more dramatic and thematic meat on the bone), this flip-side send up of "The Sound of Music" is a MUST-SEE. Keep your eyes peeled for when/if they add shows during Fringe... full review

Treya's Last Dance

A true hidden gem of this year's Fringe. I'm so pleased I took the time to walk the extra block to Hudson Backstage to get a chance to see Shyam at work. Hilarious and heartbreaking by turns, this show is messy and beautiful and a knockout showcase for the brilliant comedic (and dramatic) talents of Shyam Bhatt. Do yourself a favor and see this show during Fringe!... full review

NELL GWYNNE: A DRAMATICK ESSAYE ON ACTING AND PROSTITUTION

Bella Merlin just broke the theatre. A vivid, energizing, vital romp through an oft-forgotten corner of stage history. A refreshing take on the biographical solo play about a theatre artist (which seems to be a genre in itself), Bella brings Nell to life and I would have spent another 45 minutes with her just to hear more of her stories. The play and performance are a gift to the Fringe and should most definitely be seen.... full review

Two impressive and luminous performances. Definitely a must-see dramatic offering at Fringe this year. Grounded and moving, this was a great way to start off my 2015 Fringe experience. ... full review

Sardia is electric. What a show. So glad I was able to see it. Her story is incredible and the way she chooses to tell it is equally captivating. She has the audience in the palm of her hand. She is an extremely gifted performer and writer -- a stage presence so thrilling you can't help but want to listen. ... full review

Bonnie's Future Sisters

A hidden gem. I've been to a lot at the festival this year and this is one of the best shows I've seen. I went to "Bonnie's Future Sisters" on a whim and was more than pleasantly surprised. Crisp, funny writing, strong, specific acting all the way around, polished technical elements -- I just can't say enough. A true breath of fresh air. This is a show that knows what it is, makes no apologies and capitalizes on its potential at nearly every turn. Breezy, fun, grounded, witty, wise, and just a re... full review
