CAN'T TAKE MY (EYES) OFF OF YOU

A moody, fractured relationship piece anchored by Fiona Lakeland's luminous stage presence, "Can't Take My (Eyes) Off Of You" is more a series of impressions than a linear story. The technical elements in the transitions are deftly handled and lend a lovely, haunting quality to the play. The transitions inform the action rather than distract from it. A softly impressionistic sweep of a play punctuated and guided by Lakeland's performance....

Sasha is a joy to watch on stage. She's a live wire. This is a hilarious, messy, wonderful piece that makes you think about things that should be thought about -- and talked about! -- but are all too often deemed...ahem...too shameful to address. Kudos to Sasha. This shit is brave. Keep going there! I had a blast!...

A pure pleasure. I'm so glad I had a chance to see the Bakeress do her good work. "And She Bakes, Live" elevates self-deprecation and self-effacement to an art form. It's a dangerous line to walk, but she includes us on her journey with her incredibly sweet, endearing personality. But it's what is brewing just below the surface of her sugary exterior that really lends the show weight and power. One of the best solo shows at the Fringe. ...

Anchored by powerhouse performances, "Love Is." IS a MUST-SEE event at this year's Hollywood Fringe. The specificity in the central performances is lovely and bracing. Get your tickets now. It's the only play I've seen at this year's Fringe that I immediately wanted to see again right after the lights went down. It packs a punch. It's raw. It's naked. It's visceral. It's good entertainment. It pays off. On a host of different levels. This is a sleeper hit. See it before it's gone. It'll leave you...

I hadn't set foot inside a church for years until I entered the Church of E.L.V.I.S.$. last week. And boy, am I glad I finally did. Markhum is a gifted performer who sends up the religious establishment, pop culture and anything else that falls under his gaze. Why was real church never this much fun? I laughed my ass off and enjoyed every minute of this show. A blast. Like nothing else at the Fringe this year. Make sure to make a little room in your heart for "The Rev."...

Yes, yes, yes. Best show I've seen at the Fringe so far. Check this out. Everything a great solo performance should be. Kyla owns the stage and takes us along for the ride. Full of theatrical magic and simple brilliance, "The Mermaid Who Learned How To Fly" is a transcendent, intimate, touching, funny and profound lightning rod of a play. A definite must-see of this year's Fringe festival. ...

Jesus H: A Solo Play for the Zealot in all of Us

I found "Jesus H" especially moving because of my own religious upbringing, but it is still universal in its themes, as the subtitle suggests ("for the zealot in all of us"). It is also universal in its impact. This is all credit to the fact that Mariah Freda is such a breath of fresh air as a performer. Her performance shimmers with energy, grace and specificity. Highly, highly recommended. ...
