What I liked
The portraits of Mabley were lusty and satisfying. The archival footage of The Cotton Club, Duke Ellington etc. were always welcome!
What I didn't like
Perhaps more footage can be obtained to roll during the long and more than a few (felt like) blackouts.
My overall impression
A rare show, and a distinctive performance. And not what I expected – which gives more reason to respect. Saunders’ delivery is focused, nuanced, and often spellbinding.
