“Dying for Our Voices: How Reporting the Truth has Become a Dangerous Task,” is a work in progress that first premiered during the 2019 Hollywood Fringe Festival. We are forced to ask what happens when we neglect our journalists, and what possibilities lie ahead when we unite behind them. An issue not unique to the United States or any single country, the show features actors of many cultures, and is performed in languages and styles from around the world. Styles of dance, poetry, music and theatre from Afghanistan, Mexico, United States, Malta and the United Arab Emirates are weaved into the performance to show that artists from different cultures can work collectively, and without conflict.
Taking art forms from across nations and centuries, the multidisciplinary piece will challenge its audience, transporting them to the intense and international experience of being one of the journalists on the front lines of the truth. The immersive piece includes fictionalized letters to and from the families of some of the many journalists we have lost, inviting us to reflect on their final moments, and understand how often an assignment could be a journalist’s last.
“Dying for Our Voices: How Reporting the Truth has Become a Dangerous Task” is a call to action, a display of the dangers and challenges our journalists face in their livelihoods. It is a reminder of what the American Spirit should and could mean. The show asks its audience to step up and defend those who protect democracy the world over. All proceeds from the show will go toward the Committee to Protect Journalists (cpj.org) and Forbidden Stories (forbiddenstories.org). CPJ is an international non-profit organization dedicated to supplying resources and aid to journalists in the most dangerous parts of the world. Forbidden Stories is a non-profit project dedicated to helping journalists, working on sensitive issues, publish their stories using a secure and wide platform. On behalf of these brave men and women, the artists behind “Dying for Our Voices” encourage your support with further donations to CPJ and Forbidden Stories, and dedicated subscriptions to independent news sources.
