What I liked
The depiction of a multi ethnic American that juggles the duality of being from two different worlds while finding her place in her own as an American Bi-sexual Woman of color. The insight into the world of a Mexican/Pakistani/American.
What I didn't like
The play lacks an arc as far as story goes. It feels like a series of introductory vignettes of wonderful characters like Sofie’s mom and dad. Sofie spends a lot of time explaining to us what it means to be Mexican and Pakistani, and introduces us to a series of characters, but it somehow doesn’t completely tie all of it together. At times I felt that she was lost on stage, searching for lines or remembering what came next in a monologue.
My overall impression
The show is great fun. Sofie is a charming, delightful, funny, and beautiful soul with great presence on stage. She really opens up her heart and her vulnerability and lets us into her world. She embodies many ideals of what it means to be an American in the 21st century. She carries her plight with dignity, grace, and incredible strength, as is demonstrated in her presence and performance. Good Solo show worth seeing at Studio/Stage.
