Good ensemble cast, energetic and ingratiating, especially Amanda Blake Davis and Dana DeRuyck.
What I didn't like
The “star” turn, and the lack of fresh invention in plotting and dialogue.
My overall impression
LAMPREY provides a Fast and Furious hour, but, surprisingly, the clever program notes are funnier than the show itself. Like the ill-fated BROADWAYNOIR a few feet away, it lifts a worn out noirish concept out of context, then tries to have “fun” with it. The “Fun” comes from a cast of 8 surrounding the “star” as they assume and shed a variety of roles, all while rearranging the stage at a dizzying speed. They’re fine, but Lynn Alvarado, in the title role, SHOUTS for an hour, reminding me of (the late) Betty Hutton on speed. Is that “fun”? Not for me!
