EXORCISTIC: the Rock Musical Parody Experiment

gregory crafts · June 07, 2013 certified reviewer
I hate horror flicks, so I was a little nervous before I sat down to see Exorcistic. However, I saw Orgasmico's "Doomsday Cabaret" last year and was really impressed, so I thought I'd give this a shot. I'm glad I did. This show is a very clever, eloquently low-tech theatrical knockout. It is to the Exorcist what Scary Movie should have been to other horror movies. I laughed my ass off for 80 minutes straight. Laura Sperrazza absolutely steals the show as Megan O'Neil/herself/the demon. Musica... full review

BOBBYWOOD: WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BOBBY THE BELLBOY?

gregory crafts · June 07, 2013 certified reviewer
Great, heartfelt one-man show by voice over legend Bill Ratner about seeing the truth behind the glitz and glamor of Hollywood through the eyes of his uncle, a former TV regular. Shout out to the spot-on accompaniment by Jonathan Menchin. Don't miss it. ... full review

Four Clowns

Absolutely incredible. Amazing show. There aren't words to describe how much I sincerely enjoyed this experience. My only disappointment is that I waited so long to see it, and that they're only doing it once at the Fringe this year. ... full review

INTERNment

Joe Mahon is a chameleon. An actor in the vein of Meryl Streep or Gary Oldman, Mahon nimbly switches between three characters - the bombastic Jack, thuggish Riddick and spineless Charles - as he presents to us, his audience of "interns," a typical day in a casting office. You will laugh, and actors in the audience may just cringe a little bit as all of his characters peel back the curtain on "The Industry," revealing its dirty secrets and seedy underside. Mahon's performance is nuanced, calculate... full review

Tales Of The Extraordinary! 2012

gregory crafts · June 12, 2012 certified reviewer
This is not the first time I'd seen Tales of the Extraordinary, but I can tell you that this performance was my favorite to date. Strong voice talent, good story, audience interactivity and a band of top notch musicians (Windows to Sky) make for a fun romp through live serial radio! My only disappointment is that I can't attend the next two episodes... but I will subscribe to their podcast! Worth seeing! ... full review

RISE

The first 15 minutes can be really off-putting if you don't know what you're in for. It's awkward in a wonderful, wonderful way. Brett Colbeth is 100% committed and absolutely unflappable as he delivers a passionate Christian sermon. In the performance I attended, he didn't even bat an eyelash when a patron that was clearly feeling misled about the nature of the show, started talking back to him, then got up and walked out. (The patron didn't know that the sermon was all part of the show, and ret... full review

Ghost Light

I'd leave more of a review here, but the two reviewers before me pretty much said everything I wanted to say. I do give them props for effectively using well-planned and choreographed lighting gags to create scares, but that's about it. ... full review

Tape

This production lives at the intersection where a great script, strong direction and great acting meet. I'd never seen TAPE before, and the actors' nuanced, earnest and powerful performances had me sitting on the edge of my seat, waiting with baited breath to see what was going to happen next. Bravo. Worth seeing.... full review

Gumshoe McMonocle and the Strange Case of Rumpelsomething

gregory crafts · June 12, 2012 uncertified reviewer
Fun, earnest and clever retelling of a classic fairy tale featuring bold, larger than life characters brought to life by one very talented and creative puppeteer. Although this show is mostly for younger audiences, there are enough clever winks-and-nods that adults will be chuckling through the show as well. Worth seeing. :)... full review

D is for Dog

Let me preface this review by stating that I only got to see the first half of it. Don't believe the run time listed above or in the Fringe guide. This show is almost two hours long, and when I saw it last week, they started 15 minutes late (standard for normal LA Theatre, but really frustrating at Fringe when I had to leave at intermission to make a 10pm curtain for my own show). The show is well-acted and well-designed featuring an awesome set with large-scale, complex sci-fi elements as on... full review
