While I loved the actors and the performance, the truth is I was MOVED by the story, by the transformation in the two actors as they story progressed, and by the way the storyline was portrayed.
I have seen more than 50 plays this year, and this was one of the two most powerful pieces of Fringe 2012.
I could relate to everything that was happening, as I have had contact with mentally ill people in my life with a manic depressive/schizophrenic first wife. To watch Gary's character describe ...

This is one of the plays that I missed during the regular run of the Fringe, and was so happy that it was selected for the Best of Fringe so that I would have another opportunity to catch it. I had heard so many good things about the show, and it more than lived up to the hype.
Featuring former SAG President Alan Rosenberg and dynamic newcomer Dominic Rains, the play was a voyage in human interaction and emotion.
From the opening scene where Rosenberg enters the small Boston gym, and then ...

I kept running across the various members of Fierce Backbone throughout the Fringe, but had been unable to attend any of their shows except Texas Loves Lyla! I am so glad that I was able to carve out a few hours of my time and that I picked this particular production to attend - it was soooo worth it!
Mandy Dunlap was brilliant as Suri in the opening number, Gayby's Playdate. The writing, directing and acting were all above board. It wasn't until the end of the skit that you realized it was...

This was a very interesting piece of theater. I went into the performance not truly understanding what it would be about, and was still confused at the end.
What I was not confused about was the quality of the acting. Both Patrick Riley and Zoe Chao turned in great performances in a myriad of roles with the central theme being the pursuit of love.
It was funny, emotional, serious and breathtaking. I was most impressed by the opening scene, where they stood next to each other under multip...

Great plays come across once in a blue moon. Rise is definitely one of those great plays.
It is most remarkable and noteworthy that this is the first play drafted by writer Cal Barnes. I believe he may just be the next Arthur Miller.
The direction of Aaron Lyons is also quite evident, and continues his reputation as an exemplary performer and director. Last year he starred in Pulp Shakespeare, which was selected for extension during the Best of Fringe.
But the true stars of this produ...

I was intrigued by this play, and had to see it - it didn't hurt that the play was only 25 minutes long. I have attended plays three times that long that didn't impact me as much.
The concept was relatable to practically everybody. The play centered around dinner conversations at three tables in a crowded restaurant. At one table was a couple celebrating their five-year anniversary. At the second table was a couple going through a divorce, and meeting to sign the final papers. At the thir...

I met Sarah Doyle at the Note as I was leaving OohLaLa, and was impressed with her. She told me about the show, and I told her that I would do my best to attend. Not knowing what to expect, I can only say that this show is totally worth the effort to attend.
Weaving a compelling story from scandal is nothing new, but it is Sarah's treatment of the story that sets her apart.
Based on an incident in New South Wales, Australia involving a group of high school boys raping another classmate, S...

Last year I missed these guys, and didn't quite understand what all the fuss was about. This year I determined to check them out and I'm so glad that I did.
I also had the chance to get to know Director of Live Production Monica and actress Lauren, as well as Moon Units' keyboardist Rich, sharing conversations and shows with them throughout the Fringe.
But it was not until I witnessed the sheer brilliance of the performance that I began to understand.
Although they share a similar forma...

Getting to know Jeffrey this season has been a hoot, and I was dying to check out his alter ego "Lyla KaRug." The hype doesn't even begin to cover this show!
It was creative, funny, insightful and educational. Lyla is intelligent, witty, and played with such abandon, that you cannot help but fall in love with her. You feel for her silent suffering because of her crappy neighbor next door. You love her naivete as to business matters. But more than anything else, you applaud her ability to ...

I had heard alot about this production, and I was bound and determined to catch it. I eventually found a way to take some time off work and catch an afternoon matinee. Believe me, it was worth the effort.
Up to this point, I had not had the privilege of seeing any shows with an international cast. However, the last Welsh performance I saw, Rhodri Miles' electrifying Burton, gave me hope that this production would be great - I was not disappointed.
I had never bought into the concept of c...
