Another case of the title telling the story, as I left the theater with no clear understanding of what the play was about or what message the playwright was trying to convey. Kudos to the cast, who did their best without any clear sense of direction, much like the soldiers in basic training in the Bill Murray film Stripes. My biggest complaint was the constant repeating of the same song - through pre-show and during every scene changes. You can't tell me that was the only period song you ... full review

The Road to High Street

As a music and theatre critic, I jumped at the chance to see a show which combined elements of both my passions, and I was not disappointed. Andrew Potter is a gem as he presented his multi-media presentation of his life as a busker on the streets of San Francisco and around the world. Together with his partner Wheeler Cole, they wowed audiences everywhere they went. Potter has truly captured the essence of this life in his presentation. A definite must see!... full review

Untitled: We're Doing a Play

I went to this show expecting to see a similar story to [title of show], without the musical undertone. Unfortunately, it was a train wreck. And like every good train wreck, you just can't seem to pull yourself away from watching. The show had some good moments and some good physical comedy, but the show looks like it was thrown up at the last minute. It has potential, but I think they need to head back to the drawing board and give it a good rehash. ... full review

Glorified Disasters

What started out as a promising trilogy of tales unfortunately deteriorated into a dark story of poor choices. From the start of the second story, it all went downhill, and though the third story had promise, it couldn't pull this show back from the abyss. The show has funny moments, but overall it needs work. In addition, while the first two stories carry a similar theme, the third story seems to come from left field and does nothing to further that theme.... full review

BOBBYWOOD: WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BOBBY THE BELLBOY?

I fell in love with the storytelling of Bill Ratner last year, and this year's offering is even better. I love his personal story about his journey to Hollywood to learn about his famous uncle, Bobby Jellison, who portrayed "Bobby the Bellman" on the I Love Lucy show. The story is portrayed with the right amounts of background, commentary on the events and a perfect retelling of the tale told him by his uncle. Don't miss this show!... full review

Frank and Ava

I have always loved back stories about Hollywood celebrities, and this show did not disappoint. The show was staged at the Three Clubs, which added the perfect setting to a stellar show. I was especially impressed with the actors and their ease in portraying these two larger than life icons. A definite MUST SEE!... full review

The Ruby Besler Cabaret

A tribute of sorts to those old "how to" videos of the 40's, and an outflow from her web series, Anastasia Barnes proves her adage that "funny is the new sexy." Surrounded by her "Rubies" (Flame Cynders, Regan Carrington, Tatiana Giannoutsos and Laurel Vecsey), Barnes aka Ruby dances and sings the story of her life. Wonderfully accompanied on the piano by Gere Fennelly as Dorothy Diamond, the show felt like more of a tribute to the days of vaudeville and especially the Zeigfeld Follies. Fo... full review

Traveling with Angels

J. Rene Pena has crafted an enlightening trip through her life and struggles that gives hope that no matter what may come our way, we can be triumphant. I especially liked her metaphoric use of placing her clothes in her suitcase to indicate the emotions she was experiencing through the different portions of her story. Little Pussy

Grady last graced the Fringe stage in 2011, when he brought his award-winning play, Fear Factor: Canine Edition. Considering the title of his current piece, I thought he had switched from dogs to cats. Needless to say he wasn't talking about that kind of pussy. In actuality, Grady's new show is about the quest for manhood, and the obstacles that must be overcome to reach that destination. It is about a boy who has to grow up the hard way, without a true "father figure" to teach him how to ... full review

The Devil and Billy Markham

This was the kind of performance that could only be done in a bar, as it drew from the hazy smoke, the dim lights, and the ambience of a bar to set the mood. Lyons, also celebrating his birthday, took command and performed this play as only he can. Every stanza was brought alive, as Silverstein's words and descriptions filled my mind with the visualization of every frame of this classic poem.
