I'm Doing The Best I Can

I am so glad I came to this show. Not only did it provide the only bright spot in an otherwise dark day of dramas, it was genuinely incredible. Phoebe is amazing - her procrastination is easy to relate to, as is her comedy. Her talent is real, and not just limited to her ability to tell jokes. When she closed the show with that operatic voice, I was on my feet for a standing ovation. Unfortunately, her show only had two performances, but I hope and pray that the powers that be bring her ... full review

Rodeo Town

I had heard alot of buzz about this show so I had to include it in my schedule. It was not at all what I expected. Written by Graham Bowlin and wonderfully directed by Cameron Strittmatter, this is a dark tale, part western and part horror, about three cowboys left in a little town in the middle of nowhere - Rodeo Town. The action is taunt and the horror is just under the surface, threatening to break forth into your worst nightmare. I was most impressed with Harry Beer as Lonnie, the d... full review

Boneyard and Talisman

I wanted to see this show because it was directed by David Fofi, even though I knew nothing about it except it was a pair of one-acts with a central theme. While it was wonderfully directed, with an incredible performance by Kate Huffman in both shows, I found very little that connected the shows. True, they were both set in post-apocalyptic LA, but the only connection I could see was that each had a character who stole from the dead. In actuality, they couldn't have been more different. ... full review

The Interview

This show is billed as a dark comedy but I found nothing funny about it, unless you think it's funny to take another human being, strip him of all his dignity, refuse him even an ounce of human kindness, and then beat him to death. On the other hand, this is a taunt story, full of passion and some interesting staging and effects. The acting is hit or miss, and the play leaves you with more questions than it answers. I was doing pretty good with the story until they totally lost me in the f... full review

Daddy

Although my primary reason for seeing this show was that my friend Bethy Poluikis of Theatre Unleashed was in the cast, I left the theatre very thankful that I had come. Written and directed by Olivia Peterson, the show was a powerful masterpiece that explored family secrets, and the disastrous results that develop as a result of them. It pitted two estranged sisters who reluctantly are reunited at the funeral for their Dad. The underlying cause of the estrangement gradually comes out throug... full review

Orange Flower Water

This was not the typical "fringe" show, but an incredibly professional presentation by a group of actors who have made names for themselves in film and television. With a cast of Mick Thyer as Brad, Sarah Ann Schultz as his wife Beth, Jeff Denton (NCIS, NCIS:LA) as David and Leslie Liberman as his wife Kathy, the story revolved around what happens when friends become secret lovers, and the effect that conflict has on their respective lives. The show was beautifully staged and wonderfully ac... full review

MisShapen

I wasn't sure what to expect from this show. Considering its subject matter - the struggle with poor self-image caused by a proliferation of media about the "perfect" body - the cast delivered its message in startling clarity. This is raw theater, unpolished, yet powerful and profound in its message. You cannot help but be changed by this performance. Definitely check it out - but only if you want the truth, not the media hype.... full review

Fancy! A Southern Gothic Camp Parable

Fancy is a dream come true - an honest to goodness example of how the right motives can make even the worst circumstances change for the better. Chris Farah is simply amazing. She made you believe in Fancy, with her perfect comedic timing, her eye-popping cleavage, and her sassy wit. This is a fun show about a character created by Bobbie Gentry and made famous by Reba McIntyre. It simply must be experienced.... full review

The Time Machine Musical

Altman has created a beautiful piece of theater and has adapted it for the Fringe with the help of director Joshua Fardon, effectively turning a two-hour musical into a one-hour revue. In addition, Altman is quite effective as William Parke, the eccentric inventor of the time machine. The assembled cast is quite remarkable, creating a true ensemble. However, several of them did stand out in their performance. Besides Altman, I was most impressed with two of the Eloi, Tara Price and Tara Rau... full review

Obviously Michael

Not at all what I expected. The show is cute in a way that only shows about young kids can be. The cast make us believe they are all first graders with their attendant active imaginations. The story line is inventive and brought out ably, although stumbling at times. Overall, a good show.... full review
