The Amitycode

Crittenden’s “Pete” stitches together a female Frankenstein with coding rather than sutures to repair his own broken heart. And as with most mad scientists, his own heightened needs supersede the ethics of using his skills in the timeless quest for something more perfect than human. I had a great time at this fast-paced and fun sit-com feeling comedy tightly directed by Nick Cimiluca and smoothly executed by the ensemble cast. All four actors were wonderfully live and loose and grounded within th... full review

Even If It's Wrong

This is a bravura performance by Todd Pickering, an outstanding storyteller, covering a calendar year of his life which he spent with his parents in their Nebraska home after learning his mother had mid-phase Alzheimer’s. Pickering’s style is filthy rich with visceral and immediate detail, with only glancing acknowledgement of the emotions at hand as he leaves that for his audience who are in shock as the days whiz by month after month - with so many chores and responsibilities - which Pickering,... full review

Human Hothouse: The Aftershow

What a fun show! Great performances all around for this behind-the-scenes / in-front-of-the-scenes smart, fast, and funny show. Hanna and cast explore the heights and depths of celebrity narcissism playing stars and creator of a popular scripted TV show appearing on a post-season talk show to discuss and dish. Smartly directly, beautifully performed, hilarious to watch - a comedic joyride that’ll bring great energy to your Fringe experience. Go see it!... full review

Hey Hollywood, My Hustle Has ADHD

richard lucas · June 05, 2017 certified reviewer
The subtle and brilliant trick to “Hey, Hollywood…” is that - being a show about having ADHD - it actually has ADHD. Rasika Mathur uses storytelling and improv to walk through her recent ADHD diagnosis as liberating knowledge that has led to an understanding of why things in her past hadn’t turned out so well. But there’s an underlying and constant truth beneath that acceptance as she cleverly weaves a touching metaphor of one who cannot go in the “right” direction, performed as a wayward sea tur... full review

Dreams In Overdrive

A very fun ride through Jacobs’ funny, bare, and sometimes warmly sentimental look at his own struggles with depression and insecurity as he transitions into his mid-30s fear that he may spend the rest of his life alone. Jacobs’ energy and comedic presence carry the piece through characters and scenes he plays out in his search for where things went wrong, and recognition of the few times that things were right. Especially fun are the moments when he’s analyzing his Facebook feed. Strong use of m... full review

MUNGO!

What a fun hour this play was. Marc Peter Reyna magically brings to life a brash, hard-drinking, womanizing, and competitive true-life 1930s Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher with a charm, humility, and sincerity that captures us from beat one through the end. With a marvelously minimal set and just a small box of props, Reyna’s fully-realized character walks us through the hard-hitting wins and loses of a pro athlete who was good enough to make a couple All-Star teams, but not on a level to be remembered... full review

Mary's Medicine

An impressive piece of writing about an heroic woman we should all know, admire and emulate - but who was left out of the history books. I truly appreciate a play that finds someone like Mary Seacole and brings her to life to enrich ours. Elegant performance by Amy Argyle playing a character who maintains her dignity through challenge after challenge. Twon Pope brought a nice energy and passion to Marry’s brother, Edward, and Emilie Martz gave a solid contrast to Mary as the envious and controll... full review

The 7th Annual One-Man Show World Championships

Top to bottom laughter from a brilliantly written show that exhausted my body, mind, and soul with joy. Outstanding, spot-on performances from all four one-person-show contestants/performers and contest host parodying the genre as an indulgent fusion of sentimental self-pity and sensational self-aggrandizement. This hour flies by, and, before you know it, you’re back in your home, shredding the notes you’d written about your own one-person show concept… Well done, Mr. Hanna! ... full review

Amelia's Going Down

I enjoyed AMELIA'S GOING DOWN. An interesting notion to explore what may have happened if Amelia and navigator, Fred Noonon, had survived the crash, but landed in a place so remote that rescue was unlikely. Set as a radio play, complete with live foley (which was a nice touch, tastefully done), Amelia and Fred each face down their own demons, particularly well done with strength and subtly by Jason Britt as Noonan confronting his battle with alcohol. The actors are not bound to the prop microphon... full review
